What Are Properties Of Material
What are properties of material
Materials have various properties but there are divided into two major categories: physical and chemical. These properties are important because it enables us to know whether a material is safe or potentially harmful to us.
Physical properties of matter are those that can be observed or sensed using the five senses that we have. These include the following:
- hardness - toughness of a materials
- brittleness - ability of a material to break into shards or pieces when exposed to stress or force
- malleability - the ability of a material to be flattened to sheets when exposed to force
- conductivity - ability of material to conduct electricity
- elasticity - ablity of a material to go back to its original shape
- ductility - ability of a material to be made into fine wires
- odor - ability to be smelled
- volume - space occupied
The chemical properties of materials are properties that can only be observed when an object undergoes a chemical reaction. These include:
- reactivity - ability of a material to chemically react with other substances
- flammability - ability of an object to catch fire
- ability to rust - ability to react with oxygen and form rust (iron oxide)
